Skip bin or bin subscription? How to choose

Both a skip bin and a bin subscription solve "too much rubbish", but for different problems. For transparency: Trailer Trash Skips hires skips and also runs TT Home Waste Club, so here's how we think about the choice.

A skip bin is usually right when...

  • You're doing a one-off job: a renovation, a garage or house clear-out, a garden overhaul or a move.
  • Most of the waste is bulky or in large quantities.
  • You want it all gone in a few days, in one hit.

Extra bin pickups or a subscription are usually right when...

  • The problem is regular: your bins are full every week, or most weeks.
  • Loads are small to medium: household rubbish, boxes and packaging.
  • You don't want a skip taking up your driveway, or you'd rather not deal with permits.

What to check before you hire a skip

  • Where it will sit. On your own property you usually don't need a permit, but a skip placed on the road or nature strip generally needs a council permit. Check with your council.
  • What can't go in it. Asbestos, hazardous waste, liquids, gas bottles and batteries are commonly excluded, and rules differ between companies, so ask before you fill it.
  • The total cost, not just the hire price. Compare delivery and collection, how many days you get, weight limits and any extras.

You don't have to pick one

Many households use both. TT Home Waste Club members get a voucher off a skip hire (the amount depends on your tier) plus a standing discount on additional hires, so a membership covers the everyday overflow and a skip covers the big job. See how the skip hire discounts work.

Not sure which you need? Contact us with a rough idea of what you've got and how often it builds up, and we'll point you the right way.
