What to do when your council bin is full before collection day

Three overflowing wheelie bins and loose packaging on a suburban Melbourne street

It's Tuesday, collection isn't until next Monday, and the lid won't close. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Council bins are designed around a typical household's weekly rubbish, not a busy family, a renovation, a run of online deliveries or the week after Christmas.

Here's what to try first, what to check with your council, and what to do if it keeps happening.

Quick fixes that cost nothing

  • Flatten the boxes. Cardboard takes far more room than it needs to. Flattened or cut-down boxes in the recycling bin can free up a surprising amount of space.
  • Check each item is in the right bin. Recyclables in the general waste bin (and food scraps in the recycling bin) fill the wrong bin and can cause problems at collection. Your council's website lists exactly what goes where.
  • Bag and hold back. If you can, keep a bag or two in the garage and put it out next collection instead of cramming it in this week.
  • Don't overload it. Councils set weight limits on bins, and a bin that's too heavy can't be safely lifted. Check your council's limit.

Council options worth checking

Every council is different, so check yours. It's worth asking about:

  • Hard-waste collections. Many Victorian councils offer booked or scheduled collections for bulky items.
  • A larger or extra bin. Some councils let you swap to a bigger bin or add another, often for a fee.
  • Green-waste bins and drop-off points, if garden clippings are the problem.
  • Your local transfer station (the tip) for a one-off load you can take yourself. Fees usually apply.

We're not affiliated with any council, so always confirm the details with your own.

What not to do

  • Leave bags or boxes beside the bin. They're usually not collected, they get spread by wind and animals, and rubbish left on the street may attract a fine.
  • Force the lid shut or stack rubbish above the rim. An overloaded bin may be skipped.
  • Put hazardous items in any bin: paint, chemicals, gas bottles, batteries, asbestos or hot ashes.

When it keeps happening

If your bin overflows week after week, a one-off tidy-up won't fix it. That's the problem TT Home Waste Club is built for: a monthly membership, from $39 a month (GST included), that adds extra bin pickups on top of your council collection, so there's room for the busy weeks.

  • Essential Club: 1 extra bin pickup / month
  • Family / Executive: 2 extra bin pickups / month
  • Estate / Premier Concierge: 3 extra bin pickups / month

Memberships have a minimum term of 3 months. See what's included in extra bin pickups or compare all memberships.

If your property is a granny flat, secondary dwelling or commercial-zoned home that council doesn't service well, Extra Bin Collections gives you your own 240L bin, collected weekly or fortnightly.
